“And?”

And?”

It’s past midnight when Morgana finally comes back, tired and haggard and smug. Shawn sees her figure crossing the clearing and he walks out to meet her, half-relieved and half-irritated. “You said you’d be back before sun down,” he says without greeting. It’s not like him to worry this much— or worry at all really— but these past few days, Morgana has seemed especially secretive. It’s ironic, considering his entire job back in California is a lie, but he hates being kept in the dark.

She raises an eyebrow, the dark circles under her eyes even more prominent in the moonlight. “I said nothing of the sort.” She chuckles derisively, and begins to turn away. “You seem to be forgetting your place. You’re only here because you’re useful to me at the moment, and nothing more.” Shawn reaches out to grab her arm.

“Were you meeting with Agravaine?” he asks, ignoring the sharp pang in his chest at her dismissive words. “He can’t be trusted, you know?” Morgana narrows her eyes very slightly, but she humors him anyway.

“And why not?”

“He’s…” Shawn stares at her, unsure of what to say. Honestly, Agravaine hasn’t actually done anything particularly evil— besides betraying Arthur, which in and of itself should already make him untrustworthy, but Shawn doesn’t think bringing up that point will do him any favors. “He’s just. He’s creepy, okay? Really creepy. And I—” He stops himself, brain to mouth filter kicking in for once. No use in letting Morgana know how much he hates it whenever Agravaine’s gaze lingers on her for a little too long. “He just gives me really bad vibes. Like the Ultimate Creeper of Creeping vibes.”

This startles a laugh out of Morgana, sharp but genuine. They’re silent for a few moments, Morgana looking just as shocked as Shawn feels. He has to keep himself from smiling, knowing that it will only make things worse. She pulls away abruptly, expression something akin to embarrassment, and brushes past Shawn, walking swiftly to the cabin without a glance back.

He watches her go, his mouth tugging up into a knowing smile.
